The move comes as governments, advocacy groups, and users push for stricter regulations and better accountability in how tech giants manage harmful content.
The Rise of Hate Speech Online
Over the past few years, there’s been a noticeable uptick in online hate speech, fueled by political polarisation, global events, and the anonymity of the internet. From racist and sexist slurs to harmful disinformation, social media has become a breeding ground for toxic behaviour. In 2024 alone, reports indicated a 25% increase in hate speech incidents on popular platforms, sparking widespread concern over the mental and emotional toll it takes on users.
Policy Changes and New Initiatives
In response to growing criticism, social media companies have started implementing more robust policies aimed at curbing hate speech. Facebook, for example, has introduced new AI tools designed to detect hate speech before it goes viral. The platform claims that these tools can identify and remove harmful content with 90% accuracy, a major improvement compared to previous years.
Twitter has also made headlines by increasing the number of moderators reviewing posts flagged for hate speech. The company announced that it would hire an additional 5,000 content moderators by the end of 2025 to ensure faster and more thorough reviews of problematic content. TikTok has introduced a similar measure, working with experts to better understand and flag hate speech while promoting more inclusive content.
Pressure from Governments and Advocacy Groups
These moves come as governments around the world apply more pressure on social media platforms to act. The European Union has recently passed the Digital Services Act, which holds platforms accountable for the content shared by users and requires them to take quicker action against harmful material. In the U.S., lawmakers are pushing for new regulations that could fine companies that fail to adequately address hate speech on their platforms.
Advocacy groups like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) are also playing a major role in pushing for stronger policies. “Social media has become a haven for hate, and it’s time the companies behind these platforms took responsibility,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL, in a recent statement. “We need to see a shift from reactive measures to proactive prevention.”
Gen Z Takes a Stand
Perhaps the most significant force driving these changes is Gen Z. As the most digitally savvy generation, young people have been vocal in holding companies accountable for the content they allow to flourish. TikTok’s user base, largely made up of Gen Z, has been at the forefront of calling out hate speech and pushing for safer online spaces. TikTok’s #StopHateForProfit movement, started by influencers and activists, has gained traction in recent years, demanding greater transparency and responsibility from tech giants.
Looking Ahead: Can Platforms Keep Up?
While these steps are a promising start, many experts argue that the fight against online hate speech is far from over. As the use of AI and machine learning grows, it’s crucial for social media companies to balance freedom of speech with the need for safety and inclusivity. Critics also point out that while moderation is important, education and fostering empathy online are just as necessary.
“It’s not just about removing harmful content, but about creating a culture of kindness and respect online,” says online safety advocate Emma Parker. “We need to rethink how we engage with each other in digital spaces.”
